Crisp, Clean Costumes &
Flags
Fabric Care by Joe
Heininger
Crisp, clean costumes shout pride and confidence
to the judges and your audience. Don't make the
mistake of drawing attention to stains instead of
your performance. It's important to take care of
your costumes and flags but take the right steps
to prevent damage to the material. If your soiled
item has a label, follow the manufacturer's
suggestion. If the label is missing try the
following tips:
Because some darker colored fabrics require heavy dye in the
manufacturing process, it's always a good idea to test wash
one section to make sure the colors don't fade or bleed.
Most lycra costume fabrics and poly china flag fabrics can be
machine washed using a mild detergent and gentle cycle on the
coldest setting. If your costume and flag designs are
decorated with sequins, metal buttons, buckles, metallic
fabric, etc. hand washing is your safest option.
Hand wash a costume or flag by dunking them in a tub of cold
water and mild detergent. To clean areas that might retain the
most body soil or grass stains, use a very soft brush or cloth
and gently scrub the area clean.
Dry your costumes by laying them flat to air dry, doing this
will prevent the fabric from stretching out. In the case of
your flags, just throw in the dryer on air, no heat.
Regular care for your flags and costumes will help keep you
looking and performing the best throughout the season.
